Mass Trail Closures Across Seymour Mountain

Title: Seymour Trail Closures Announced

Date: Jan 22nd, 2025 Page: Story found in NSMB.com - Articles

Author: Cam McRae - NSMB.com

Summary:

This article was posted earlier this year and was the cause of mass panic across the local mountain bike scene. The article is reporting on recent updates and mandates from the NSMBA (the North Shore Mountain Bike Association) towards the construction of unsanctioned mountain bike trails. It talks about how recently the NSMBA has started to crack down on community-built trails which they call “rogue trails”. They claim the unsanctioned trails are hindering the construction of official trails. This was not taken well by the community at all as unsanctioned trails are a huge part of biking culture. Cam McRae, the author of this article goes on to interview some people from the community and the opinion is shared. No one is happy about it, and they want to undo this change.

Thoughts:

I chose this article because it is most relevant to my life at the moment. This is because I am an avid mountain biker, and the state of the mountain trails is a huge concern to me. I personally ride these "rogue trails" all the time and I am very sad to see them start to be decommissioned. It's heartbreaking because all these trails are community built and maintained, and this destruction is like an attack on the community. The NSMBA's reasoning is that these trails affect the surrounding nature, which may be true if the trails are built incorrectly. However, most of the bigger unsanctioned trails are built by professionals, these trails are up to the standards of modern sanctioned trails, but the NSMBA refuses to sanction them. Instead, they tear them down which only creates a divide in the community, which is the last thing the community needs right now, given that the state of the bike market is terrible and it looks like the sport is dying.
