Summary:

A large fire broke out in the morning of May 10th, 2025, at the Silverlynn Apartment complex for seniors in Lynn Valley, this being the second fire within the past 3 years at the residence. The complex was still under repair from the previous fire in 2022 which ended up killing one person. This latest fire had no casualties but resulted in the rescue of 10 people from balconies and 2 being hospitalized. District Fire Chief Mike Danks explained that the fire was able to spread as quickly as it did because the recent construction lacked drywall, he states, "Upon arrival, there was a fully involved working fire, crews made entry and encountered extreme heat." The fire displaced 36 residents, who now, with the help of the North Shore Emergency Management are receiving emergency support.

Thoughts:

This event, while awful, likely ended in the best way possible, with no deaths and only a few minor injuries. I remember hearing about the fire for the first time while I was at BCIT for a business pitch. One of my friends was concerned that it was his house that was burning as there wasn't a lot of information available at the time and he lived near to the location of the fire. Fortunately his house was ok but nonetheless the situation was still terrible. On my way back from downtown I had to go through Lynn Valley, and I saw, first hand, the aftermath of the fire and the response of the fire departments. The smoke was extremely thick, and the road was littered with emergency vehicles. I am so glad mostly everyone is ok and the fire was contained to a small area effected.

Principal Terri Van Euler emphasized "our gifted and talented program is an elite option that is definitely not for everyone," "the program's rigorous academic setting is suited only for the best at their school, those who are able to do school work for up to 40 minutes without any screen time." She acknowledges that this is a big ask, even for adults but it is a key expectation from all in the gifted program. While the use...

The article is reporting on recent updates and mandates from the NSMBA (the North Shore Mountain Bike Association) towards the construction of unsanctioned mountain bike trails. It talks about how recently the NSMBA has started to crack down on community-built trails which they call “rogue trails ”. T hey claim the unsanctioned trails are hindering the construction of official trails. This was not taken well by the community at all as unsanctioned trails are a huge part of biking culture. Cam McRae, the author of this article goes on to interview some people from the community and the opinion is shared. No one is happy about it, and they want to un...
