Summary:
At 9:45AM, April 21st, Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the death of Pope Francis. Saying, "With deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father." Cardinals set a meeting for Tuesday, April 22nd to decide on a funeral date and on Wednesday is was said that the Pope's body would be transferred to St Peter's Basilica. While this death was sudden, it was not unforeseeable. The Pope, for the past few months, has been fighting with bronchitis which later progressed into bilateral pneumonia. This was not his first time dealing with respiratory illness as he has had a history with infection and even a partial lung removal. Overall the news was devastating and shook the world, and everyone is curious what the next step will be.
Thoughts:
My thoughts on this matter likely align with most people's. It is very sad to see Pope Francis gone, he was an amazing Pope and did so much for his people. Naturally this was bound to happen eventually and moving forward we can only hope the next Pope is just as amazing as Pope Francis. Something that surprised me a lot was how quickly everything moved along. This article was posted within a half hour of the Pope's announced death. Along with the sheer speed of this announcement, I found it interesting how all of the arrangements for his passing were already set in motion. Funeral dates, transfer of the body and more were all set in motion within minutes of his death.
