Summary:
Smoke from wildfires in Manitoba, Canada, has been drifting into the States, causing severe impact to the air quality in the mid-west. As of right now, 17,000 people have been evacuated do to what Premier Wab Kinew said was "the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people's living memory." Meteorologists report that states such as Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan are some of the more affected states, all receiving air quality alerts in the red category. This meaning, the smoke will have an effect on the general public's health. Health experts express their concerns as wildfires like this can be directly linked to spikes in cardiorespiratory hospitalizations.
Thoughts:
This news is honestly quite terrifying to hear. Every year there seems to be some sort of terrible wildfire going on but it seems like its happening much sooner this year. It makes me concerned for our future if this is happening so soon, I can already notice the differences in weather due to climate change and I'm only 17. I can't imagine how much worse it might get, because it will get to be much more than just smoke affecting air quality. Its going to be sea levels rising, losing the arctic, animals going extinct and so much more. But, what were dealing with right now is bad enough, it's so unfortunate that there have been so many evacuations already and more to come. I'm sure soon there will be smoke in BC, we can only pray it won't be an extremely dry summer and that we can preserve the forests that make B.C., B.C.
