Summary:
On June 8th, 2025, The National Guard was deployed in Los Angeles, by the orders of President Donald Trump. The guard confronted protesters outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, releasing tear gas as protesters approached riot lines. The deployment involved roughly 300 troops, launched without the approval of California Governor Gavin Newsom. This override of control marks a first since 1965. Trump justified the excess use of force by claiming the protestors were "violent people", saying "were not going to let our country be torn apart like it was under Biden." Governor Newsom call this action a "complete over-reaction".
Thoughts;
Reading this article was extremely concerning, I knew things in the United States weren't great but this is a whole new level. Trump is completely overstepping here. His own citizens were simply protesting the current state of immigration law, enacting their first amendment right, but Trump's reaction to this was to utilize force through the National Guard, something that hasn't been done in that way for over 50 years. Now people are being assaulted in their own streets for wanting fair immigration rights. The National Guard is using extremely excessive force, against their own Governor's wishes, which anyone would see as cruel.
